Shoulder Shrug Exercise for Reducing Stress and Opening the Airways

This simple Shoulder Shrug exercise is amazing for releasing tension anytime or anywhere bringing stress relief to your shoulders where tension is often held.

Benefits of the Shoulder Shrug Exercise.

Can have a calming effect on your sympathetic nerve “fight or flight” response.

  1. Along with a Calm Breathing Exercise, the Shrug Your Shoulders exercise can bring stress relief.
  2. It can open your bronchial passages to inhale your broncho inhaler more deeply.

The fibre article, Stressed? Shrug Your Shoulders and Relax, describes the Shrug Your Shoulders exercise.

Shoulder Shrug for stress and tension relief:

  • Lift the top of your shoulders towards your ears while bringing your shoulder  blades together (feel slight tension in your neck and shoulders).
  • Hold this feeling of tension for 3 to 5 seconds.
  • Relax your shoulders into their normal position.
  • Repeat steps 1 – 3 at least two more times.

Alternate Shoulder Shrug to open bronchial airways while using and inhaler:

  • Lift and lower the left shoulder while inhaling medication.
  • Lift and lower your right shoulder while inhaling second dose.

This year’s March winds came on strong for me with coughing and wheezing. It was difficult to breathe in deep enough with my inhaler to get a full dose of medication. I used the Alternate Shrug Your Shoulders exercise while inhaling, and I was able to breathe in the medication deeply. Amazing! Give it a try for stress relief, calming, or inhaling.
